Netflix is developing a reboot of the 2004 romantic comedy “13 Going On 30,” nearly two decades after the original film captured a devoted audience. The new version will be executive produced by Jennifer Garner, who starred as the lead character Jenna Rink in the original, alongside Mark Ruffalo.
The reboot will feature Emily Bader, known for her role in Netflix’s “People We Meet on Vacation,” and Logan Lerman, recognized for films such as “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” in leading roles. Direction will be handled by Brett Haley, who previously worked with Bader on “People We Meet on Vacation.”
Haley described the original film as “funny, emotional, deeply human,” highlighting its lasting cultural impact and the memorable performances by Garner, Ruffalo, and Judy Greer. He acknowledged the significance of Garner’s involvement as an executive producer, given her association with the original project. Haley also expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with Bader and collaborating with Lerman, calling their pairing “magical.”
Details about the plot remain under wraps, but the script is being developed by Hannah Marks, who wrote and directed “Mark, Mary, & Some Other People.” Flora Greeson, the writer of “The High Note,” has contributed revisions to the screenplay.
Since the reboot announcement, online discussions have sparked speculation about the setting and tone of the new adaptation. Some fans wonder whether the story will maintain the lightheartedness of the original or take a different approach given contemporary contexts. One social media user voiced concerns that updating the time period to the present day might alter the film’s charm, describing the premise of a teenager from 2009 waking up in today’s world as potentially unsettling rather than comedic.
As the project progresses, Netflix and the creative team have yet to release further information regarding release dates or additional casting. The reboot aims to bring a fresh perspective to a beloved rom-com while honoring the original’s appeal.
