A detective with the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office was fatally shot Thursday during an eviction operation in Porterville, California, after a suspect opened fire on deputies in what authorities described as an ambush.
The suspect, identified as 37-year-old David Eric Morales, was engaged by law enforcement officers around 10:40 a.m. Morales reportedly fired a high-powered rifle at deputies as they attempted to serve an eviction notice. After a prolonged standoff lasting several hours, during which Morales remained barricaded inside his residence and repeatedly fired at officers, he exited the building through a window. Authorities said he continued to display a threat by remaining prone on the ground in camouflage clothing and refusing to surrender.
Law enforcement personnel deployed a BearCat armored vehicle, which ran over Morales, resulting in his death. Sheriff Mike Boudreaux stated that Morales “got what he deserved” due to his ongoing threat to officers.
The detective who was killed has been identified as Deputy Randy Hoppert, a former Navy corpsman. He was struck by gunfire during the initial confrontation and was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff indicated that Morales had likely “laid in wait” for deputies arriving to execute the eviction, suggesting premeditation in the deadly encounter.
An investigation into the events leading up to the shooting remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the incident. No additional injuries to deputies have been reported. The sheriff’s office emphasized the dangers law enforcement officers face during such operations, especially when confronting suspects prepared to engage in violent resistance.
