The city of Hebi in Henan province is showcasing its vibrant spring charm through the 2026 Hebi Cherry Blossom Festival and tourism promotion event, which began on April 2 and will run until April 20. The festival highlights a unique blend of cultural heritage, modern sports, and technological features designed to create an immersive experience for visitors.
Hebi, known for its abundant cherry blossom resources, boasts more than 300,000 cherry trees spanning 87 varieties. One notable display can be found along a 4-kilometer stretch of Huaxia South Road in Qibin district, where over 23,000 revered cherry blossom trees bloom in succession. The event takes advantage of this natural backdrop to create a citywide celebration of spring.
A significant aspect of the festival is its integration of the ancient Chinese literary classic, the Book of Songs (Shijing), which dates from the 11th to 6th centuries BC. Organizers emphasize Hebi’s deep historical connections to the text, citing the mention of the Qihe River—Hebi’s “mother river”—in 39 poems within the collection. In a creative approach, visitors can gain free entry to selected cultural and tourist sites by reciting or reading poems from the Shijing. The program also features artistic performances, poetry gatherings, and Shijing-inspired exhibitions, aiming to immerse attendees in both natural beauty and cultural depth.
Alongside the cultural elements, the festival prominently features pickleball, a rapidly growing sport globally and an emerging industry in Hebi. The city is advancing the development of a full pickleball industrial chain, and this year’s festival includes a national competition with 21 teams. At the opening ceremony, robots performed a pickleball showcase, symbolizing the event’s fusion of tradition, sport, and technology. Officials explained the intention behind combining the “static” beauty of cherry blossoms with the “dynamic” energy of sports to offer a multifaceted visitor experience.
Complementing the natural and cultural attractions, the festival has organized cultural markets along the blossom viewing areas. These markets provide local delicacies, cultural and creative products, and flea markets for secondhand goods, enhancing the interactive and commercial appeal of the event.
Since its inception in 2015, the Hebi Cherry Blossom Festival has grown into a signature annual event attracting tourists nationwide. Organizers highlight the evolving nature of the festival, which continuously integrates poetry, sports, technology, and local traditions, underscoring Hebi’s commitment to celebrating its heritage while embracing contemporary attractions.
