San Francisco police arrested a person early Friday after an incendiary device was reportedly thrown at the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Authorities responded at approximately 3:43 a.m. to the scene near Chestnut and Jones streets in the Russian Hill neighborhood, where a Molotov cocktail was allegedly hurled at the residence.
OpenAI confirmed that the property targeted belongs to Altman, who purchased the estate in March 2020 for $27 million. The compound, located at 950 Lombard Street, features two residences with a modern addition, including an infinity pool overlooking the city, a separate wellness cottage, and a garage accessed through a tunnel described as “Batcave”-style. The design has drawn attention for its unconventional combination of a traditional home built atop an industrial, bunker-like foundation.
No injuries were reported, and the individual responsible was taken into custody. OpenAI stated that the same suspect also issued threats directed at the company’s San Francisco headquarters. The company expressed gratitude for the prompt response by the San Francisco Police Department and the city’s support in ensuring employee safety. Investigations are ongoing, and law enforcement is being assisted by OpenAI, but the suspect’s identity has not yet been made public.
Altman, who became a father to a baby boy last year with his husband Oliver Mulherin, an Australian software engineer, has faced increasing public scrutiny as the leader of an influential artificial intelligence firm.
Some observers have suggested the attack may stem from political tensions related to AI technology’s societal impact. San Francisco venture capitalist Lee Edwards, general partner at Root Ventures, noted that heightened media coverage and political rhetoric portraying AI as an existential threat may contribute to volatile reactions. “There is a lot of press out there, and political movements, sometimes amplified by mainstream politicians, that frames AI technology as apocalyptic and an existential threat to humanity,” Edwards said. He added that such hyperbolic language can have dangerous consequences, citing similar incidents occurring previously.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, working to determine the motives and prevent future incidents.
