After a two-year break, the Silver Room Sound System Block Party is set to return this summer at a new location near its original neighborhood. The event is scheduled for July 18, running from noon to 10 p.m. at The Salt Shed, located at 1357 N. Elston Ave. Tickets will go on sale April 17.
The block party was founded in 2002 by Chicago entrepreneur Eric Williams as a grassroots alternative to the city's larger summer street festivals. Known for its emphasis on house music—a genre that originated in Chicago—the event has attracted a dedicated following over the years. Unlike many music festivals, the Silver Room Block Party has traditionally focused solely on music and dancing, without the presence of alcohol or drugs. Former volunteer Rebecca McQuillen noted that the event’s alcohol-free environment once drew police attention, as authorities were surprised by the substance-free gatherings.
Originally held in a Wicker Park alley near the Silver Room art and fashion boutique, the block party expanded throughout the 2000s. It relocated to Evergreen Avenue, where attendance reached over 8,000 by 2014. In 2016, the event shifted to Hyde Park, drawing crowds exceeding 40,000 before the COVID-19 pandemic forced a suspension in 2020 and 2021.
The festival resumed in 2022 as a two-day, ticketed event at Oakwood Beach, repeating there in 2023 with the announcement that it would be the final installment. Williams cited difficulties in turning a profit and the extensive effort required to organize the festival as reasons for the decision to pause the event. Despite referring to the 2023 gathering as the festival’s conclusion, the block party is now returning in a more scaled-back, single-day format.
Williams was not immediately available for comment regarding the latest plans. The 2026 edition marks a significant return of a cultural event that has played a notable role in Chicago’s house music scene for nearly a quarter-century.
