A 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old in the Bronx last week, police said. Jasiri Emanuel surrendered to authorities on Wednesday at the 47th Precinct stationhouse, according to his attorney. He faces charges including murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon for the incident that occurred on April 2.
Emanuel pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Thursday in Bronx Criminal Court, where Judge Katherine O’Brien ordered him held without bail. Law enforcement officials noted this is Emanuel’s first arrest in New York City.
Attorney Aaron Rubin said Emanuel voluntarily turned himself in after being asked by police and expressed confidence in the justice system. “Mr. Emanuel has never been arrested before in his life,” Rubin said.
The shooting occurred shortly after 10:20 p.m. outside a bodega on Bronxwood Avenue near East 217th Street in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx. Police said Ricardo Bygrave was shot in the head following what witnesses described as a verbal altercation that escalated into a physical fight. The suspect then fired two shots before fleeing.
Emergency responders transported Bygrave to Jacobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Law enforcement sources indicated that both the victim and Emanuel lived within a few blocks of the shooting site.
The incident underscores the ongoing homicide challenges in the Bronx, which has recorded 24 murders so far in 2026, representing approximately 40% of the city’s total homicides this year. Queens follows with 17 homicides, Brooklyn with 14, Manhattan with five, and Staten Island has not reported any murders, according to recent NYPD statistics.
Bygrave’s death came the day after city officials announced a 30% reduction in murder investigations during the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period last year. From January through March, police investigated 55 homicides citywide, down from 79 in the first three months of 2025.
Emanuel is scheduled to return to court on Tuesday. Police continue their investigation into the case.
