An early artwork by David Hockney, created when he was 19 years old, is set to be auctioned next month with an estimated value of up to £10,000. The piece, titled Bolton Junction Eccleshill, Bradford, dates back to Hockney’s time as a student at Bradford Regional College of Art.

The mixed-media work is being consigned by the family of Malcolm Riley, who served as a part-time tutor at the same college. According to Francesca Young, a specialist in modern and contemporary art at Tenants Auctioneers, the painting was purchased directly from Hockney’s end-of-year show by Riley, and has remained with his family ever since. Young described the appearance of the piece at auction as an unexpected and exciting opportunity.

The sale will take place in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, on 13 June, with the artwork expected to fetch between £7,000 and £10,000. The auction presents a rare chance to acquire a youthful work from one of Britain’s most renowned artists, offering insight into Hockney’s early development.
