Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers were observed conducting passenger identification checks at LaGuardia Airport on Thursday, a measure implemented following a presidential directive to assist the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The deployment aims to alleviate extensive security line delays attributed to TSA staffing shortages amidst an ongoing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown.

At LaGuardia's Terminal B, federal officers, some identified by "Enforcement and Removal Operations" patches, were seen scanning IDs at the conclusion of a security checkpoint. Travelers reportedly expressed surprise at the presence of federal immigration officers performing these duties.

President Trump authorized the deployment of ICE personnel to airports earlier this week to support the beleaguered TSA. The agency has been contending with staff shortages that have led to hours-long queues at airports nationwide. Many TSA employees have reportedly declined to work without pay during the 40-day-long federal shutdown affecting the DHS.

Prior to the deployment, a senior border official clarified that ICE agents would not undertake tasks for which they are untrained, such as baggage screening. Instead, their role would focus on relieving TSA workers of more routine responsibilities, including monitoring hallways and doors. A DHS spokeswoman subsequently confirmed that ICE agents assigned to airports received a "standard TSA training curriculum" and were "verifying identification using TSA equipment and standard operating procedures."

Similar instances of ICE agents performing ID checks have been reported at other major airports, including locations in Atlanta and Phoenix, as federal agencies grapple with the operational impact of the prolonged government shutdown.
