Lyon’s annual Fête des Lumières, a four-night festival celebrating light art, is set to take place from December 5 to 8. The event draws over two million visitors each year and features a diverse array of installations and projections throughout the city’s historic center.
The festival originated in 1999, inspired by a local tradition dating back to 1852 when residents illuminated their windowsills and balconies with candles to honor the Virgin Mary. This practice continues alongside the contemporary light displays, blending historical homage with modern artistic expression.
During the festival, large-scale light projections animate iconic landmarks in Lyon, including the Gothic cathedral and the Baroque façade of the fine art museum. These installations are created by artists from both France and around the world, transforming the urban landscape into a vibrant open-air gallery that highlights the city’s architectural heritage.
Fête des Lumières showcases a total of more than 20 creations each year, contributing to its reputation as one of the most significant light festivals globally. The event combines community participation with cutting-edge visual technology to create immersive experiences for visitors, reaffirming its place as a major cultural highlight in Lyon’s calendar.
