Naomi Osaka advanced to the third round of the French Open on Thursday, continuing to draw attention not only for her performance on court but also for her distinctive fashion choices. The Japanese star, known for integrating high-fashion collaborations into her tournament appearances, once again made a statement with her outfit ahead of her second-round match against Croatia’s Donna Vekic.
Osaka’s ensemble featured a golden bomber jacket paired with a long ivory train. Reflecting on her look, she said the inspiration came from women’s Victorian-era dresses, specifically those with a “poof” in the background. She secured a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 victory over Vekic, maintaining her momentum at Roland Garros.
Her fashion expressions have provoked mixed reactions among fellow players. Laura Siegemund, who Osaka defeated in the first round, emphasized that her focus remains on tennis, stating she comes to compete rather than participate in a “fashion show.” Conversely, Vekic praised Osaka’s sartorial choices as a form of self-expression, suggesting that some others take the sport too seriously and should be more relaxed about such displays.
Despite the spotlight on her wardrobe, Osaka is achieving her best showing at the French Open since 2019. She is set to face American teenager Iva Jovic in the upcoming round. Osaka also shared an unusual off-court experience, revealing she was involved in a minor car accident in Paris. She described the incident as alarming but not life-threatening, expressing hope to avoid further mishaps.
Meanwhile, other notable players advanced to the last 32 with straightforward wins. World number one Aryna Sabalenka overcame France’s Elsa Jacquemot in a competitive first set before pulling away to claim a 7-5, 6-2 victory. Defending champion Coco Gauff also progressed, defeating Mayar Sherif 6-3, 6-2.
Sixth seed Amanda Anisimova moved through easily as well, needing just 25 minutes to take the first set 6-0 against Julia Grabher, who retired due to health issues.
