Pope Leo emphasized the importance of peace and coexistence during his visit to Africa, responding to recent criticisms from U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking on a flight from Algeria to Cameroon as part of a 10-day tour across the continent, the pontiff called for respect among diverse communities and highlighted the value of dialogue in fostering harmony.
“The world needs to hear a message of peace and coexistence today,” the Pope stated, underscoring his ongoing commitment to promoting unity amid global tensions. His remarks came shortly after President Trump renewed his public criticism of the pontiff on social media earlier in the day.
Trump, who had previously described Pope Leo as “terrible” shortly before the African tour began, posted an image on social media showing himself embraced by Jesus, with the caption expressing disdain for what he termed the “Radical Left Lunatics.” This marked the second public confrontation between the U.S. president and the Pope within the week.
Despite the personal attacks, the pontiff affirmed on Monday that he would continue to voice opposition to the conflict involving Iran, signaling his intent to maintain his stance on issues of war and peace irrespective of external criticism.
The Pope’s visit follows broader international concern over the escalating tensions in the Middle East. Alongside criticism from the pontiff, China has also voiced disapproval of the ongoing conflict, reflecting a wider call for de-escalation.
In Cameroon, Pope Leo is expected to continue advocating for peace and dialogue as he completes the second leg of his African journey. His engagement with local communities aims to reinforce messages of unity against a backdrop of global political discord.
