The State of Qatar has reaffirmed its commitment to the United Nations Charter and called for an end to ongoing violations of its principles. The statement was delivered by Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, during a high-level open debate titled “Upholding the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centred International System” held at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Sheikha Alya emphasized that the UN Charter, established at the conclusion of World War II, is not merely a legal document but a moral covenant aimed at preventing the recurrence of global conflicts. However, she noted that the international order founded on the Charter is currently under severe strain due to violations of national sovereignty and territorial integrity, which undermine the credibility of the United Nations and call for renewed political commitment from member states.

Highlighting the necessity of a unified global response, Sheikha Alya stressed that efforts must align with the Charter’s principles and the UN’s founding objectives. She cautioned against selective interpretation of the Charter’s provisions, underscoring the importance of respecting the sovereignty and equality of all nations. She specifically condemned the use or threat of force, particularly in light of ongoing breaches of international law and humanitarian standards.

The Qatari representative underscored the importance of maintaining the United Nations as the central framework for the international order and called for accelerating reforms within the UN system to enhance inclusivity and effectiveness. She advocated for strengthening the organization’s financial resources, human capital, and institutional capacities to better address twenty-first-century challenges.

Sheikha Alya also highlighted the need to invest in conflict prevention by addressing root causes through mediation and diplomatic dialogue in line with the Charter and relevant UN resolutions. She pointed to Qatar’s prominent role in mediation and preventive diplomacy as key elements of its foreign policy, noting its reputation as a trusted international mediator engaged in facilitating ceasefire agreements, prisoner exchanges, conflict resolution, and peace negotiations across multiple regions.

In this context, Sheikha Alya expressed Qatar’s support for the ongoing Pakistan-led mediation efforts between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, affirming Qatar’s commitment to promoting de-escalation and fostering peace and stability in the region.
