Diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran remain stalled amid conflicting statements from both sides. Despite earlier signs suggesting a possible breakthrough, key issues continue to hinder progress.

At a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump reaffirmed that Iran would not be granted any relief from existing sanctions as part of the negotiations. “We’re not talking about any easing of sanctions or giving money,” he said, underscoring the firm US stance. Earlier that day, in an interview with PBS News, Trump reiterated his expectation that Iran would relinquish its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. He stated that the material “will either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or, preferably, in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place.”

Iran, however, has maintained it will not surrender the approximately 440 kilograms (970 pounds) of nuclear material it currently holds. More than a month ago, Trump had claimed that Iran had agreed to let the US retrieve the uranium “at a leisurely pace,” a statement Tehran promptly denied.

The disagreement over Iran’s nuclear program remains a central obstacle in ceasefire discussions aimed at ending a conflict that began more than 12 weeks ago. Other major points of contention between the two parties include the continuation of US sanctions, the blockade of Iranian ports, and control over the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route.

While Trump acknowledged that Iran appears eager to reach an agreement, he expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of talks. “We’re not satisfied with it, but we will be. We will be. Either that or we’ll have to just finish the job,” he said, suggesting that military options remain on the table if negotiations fail.

The ongoing impasse reflects the complex and multifaceted nature of the US-Iran conflict, with both sides entrenched on critical demands. As talks continue, the prospect of a diplomatic resolution remains uncertain.
