A 24-year-old woman from Bristol has admitted responsibility for an XL Bully dog that fatally attacked her teenage cousin last year, a court heard. Kelcie Reed pleaded guilty to being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog following the incident in February 2023 that resulted in the death of 19-year-old Morgan Dorsett.

The attack occurred at a flat in Bristol, where Reed’s dog, named Prince, inflicted severe neck injuries on Morgan. Emergency services were called to the scene, but despite their efforts, Morgan was pronounced dead at the location. A neighbour recalled witnessing a blood-soaked woman screaming and crying hysterically shortly after the attack.

XL Bully dogs, including the one involved in this case, were banned by the UK government in 2023 due to their disproportionate involvement in fatal incidents. Local reports indicated that the dog involved in this attack was registered properly and described as being aggressive toward men but reportedly safe around women and children.

During proceedings at Bristol Crown Court, family members of both Reed and Dorsett were seated separately. Reed faces sentencing on July 9 and could receive a prison term of up to 14 years. Tributes from Morgan’s family commemorated her memory, expressing that she holds a unique place in their hearts.

The case highlights continuing concerns regarding the regulation and ownership of banned dog breeds and their potential risks to public safety.
