Eleven men have appeared in court charged with the manslaughter of a football supporter who died five years after sustaining severe brain damage in an attack in 2015. Simon Dobbin, a fan of Cambridge United, was assaulted in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, in March 2015 while making his way home after watching his team play Southend United.
The violent incident left Mr. Dobbin with catastrophic brain injuries, from which he suffered for half a decade. He passed away on October 21, 2020, at the age of 48, due to complications arising from the sustained injuries.
The group of 11 individuals, all residents of Essex, faced charges during their initial appearance before magistrates at Colchester magistrates’ court on Tuesday, March 31. Each man is charged with manslaughter, with the accusation specifically relating to Mr. Dobbin's death on the aforementioned date in 2020. The defendants' ages range from 29 to 49 years old.
The court appearance marks a significant development in the long-running case surrounding the fatal assault. The proceedings are expected to continue as the legal process unfolds for those accused in connection with Mr. Dobbin's death.
