Morgan Rogers has completed a £117 million transfer from Aston Villa to Chelsea, signing a six-year contract and becoming the most expensive English player in history. The 23-year-old forward joined Chelsea after the club moved swiftly to finalize the deal within 72 hours, outpacing Arsenal, who had been considered frontrunners to secure his signature.
Rogers had been a standout performer for Villa, scoring 31 goals in 125 appearances since his transfer from Middlesbrough in January 2024. His performances helped Villa achieve a top-four Premier League finish and qualify for the Europa League last season. The club’s valuation of Rogers reportedly exceeded £120 million, influenced by recent high-profile transfers, including the £116 million paid by Manchester City for Rogers’ England teammate Elliot Anderson.
Arsenal engaged in earlier discussions with Villa and Rogers but were unwilling to meet the full asking price, reportedly offering a maximum of around £80 million initially and slightly above £100 million later. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had identified Rogers as a potential solution for the team’s left-wing challenges and held personal talks with the player, but negotiations faltered over the valuation and the club’s approach, which Villa found indirect compared to Chelsea’s more immediate and direct negotiations.
Chelsea’s renewed interest came shortly after their semi-final exit at the World Cup. Manager Xabi Alonso engaged with Rogers, which reportedly played a significant role in persuading the forward to join Stamford Bridge. Chelsea’s owners, BlueCo, have made Rogers their most expensive signing, surpassing the club record set by Enzo Fernandez in 2023. The deal follows a series of acquisitions this summer, including Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha, and Geovany Quenda, aiming to strengthen the squad after a disappointing 10th-place league finish last season.
Rogers expressed enthusiasm about joining Chelsea, describing the club as the biggest in London and praising the new manager, squad, and club project. He is expected to join the team following their pre-season tour of Australia and Asia.
Chelsea remain active in the transfer market, reportedly considering a move for England defender John Stones, who left Manchester City this summer as a free agent. Arsenal are also monitoring the situation amid their ongoing efforts to bolster their squad.
The transfer includes a sell-on clause benefiting Middlesbrough, Rogers’ former club before Aston Villa, which is set to receive about £20 million from the deal. Chelsea have structured Rogers’ contract with a modest base salary supplemented by significant performance-related incentives, consistent with the club’s recent wage policies.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa is pursuing a loan deal for Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho, with an obligation to buy next summer. Garnacho, 22, transferred from Manchester United for £40 million last year but saw limited playing time last season. Other Premier League clubs, including Roma and West Ham United, remain linked with transfers as the summer window progresses.
