Somali pirates have hijacked an Iranian fishing vessel carrying 23 people off the northeastern coast of Somalia, raising concerns about increased piracy activity in the region and potential threats to commercial shipping lanes. The vessel, named Azini, was seized on Thursday between the coastal towns of Bandar Bayla and Hafun, according to a maritime security officer with the Puntland Maritime Police Force who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The ship was carrying 21 Iranian crew members and two Somali security guards at the time of the attack. The Maritime Security Centre – Indian Ocean issued alerts warning that the vessel was entering a commercial shipping corridor and could be used as a “mother ship,” a floating base for pirates to launch attacks on other vessels in the area.
This incident marks a continuation of a resurgence in Somali piracy across the Gulf of Aden and western Indian Ocean. Since April of this year, pirates have hijacked six commercial vessels, with some incidents occurring far from Somalia’s coastline. Notably, in September, pirates reportedly killed five crew members aboard the oil tanker MT Honour 25 before Puntland security forces intervened and recovered the vessel. Sixteen suspected pirates were detained in connection with that case.
The renewed piracy activity compounds existing regional security challenges, especially amid ongoing tensions related to the conflict involving Iran. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and threats from Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels targeting Saudi-linked shipping routes through Bab al-Mandeb Strait have complicated maritime traffic, particularly for oil shipments. These factors have forced some vessels to take longer routes around Africa, extending voyage times by up to a month and driving tanker costs higher. According to reports from September, daily spot charter rates for tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz surged to approximately $1 million.
The European Union’s naval Operation Atalanta is currently investigating the hijacking of the Azini and has urged vessels operating in the region to maintain vigilance and report any suspicious activity. The safety of the Azini’s crew remains unknown as security forces monitor the situation.
The recent piracy incidents underscore ongoing concerns about maritime security in a strategically vital area that is critical to global energy supplies and commercial shipping. Regional authorities and international forces continue efforts to contain piracy threats amid broader geopolitical and security challenges.
