A speedboat carrying Indian tourists capsized off southern Vietnam near Phu Quoc island on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of 15 people, officials confirmed. The boat overturned less than half a kilometer from shore shortly after departing from Hon May Rut Ngoai island, a popular tourist destination located about 10 kilometers south of Phu Quoc.
The vessel was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when the incident occurred in the afternoon, according to Vietnamese authorities. Eyewitnesses reported that the boat capsized amid rough seas and strong winds. The area is known for its clear waters and white sand beaches, attracting millions of tourists annually.
Several nearby boats and coast guard vessels quickly responded to calls for help, rescuing 21 people from the water. Rescue efforts involved jet skis ferrying survivors back to shore and bystanders providing first aid once they arrived. Despite swift action, all 15 fatalities, identified as foreign nationals, were recovered from the scene. The injured were transported to local hospitals, with at least two in critical condition.
Indian officials confirmed that many of those on board were employees or partners of Lava International, a smartphone and consumer electronics manufacturer headquartered in India. The company expressed condolences and said it was providing support to those affected and their families. The majority of the tourists reportedly came from the southern Indian states of Telangana and Tamil Nadu.
In response to the accident, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung ordered an investigation and instructed authorities to hold those responsible accountable. Local officials cited heavy winds and high waves as probable factors contributing to the capsizing. Authorities in Telangana established a control room to coordinate assistance and communicate with families of the victims, while Tamil Nadu’s chief minister called on Indian authorities to expedite support and repatriation efforts.
Vietnam’s tourism sector has experienced significant growth, with Phu Quoc receiving more than 1.8 million foreign visitors last year. However, boating accidents remain a concern in the country, which often faces extreme weather conditions, flooding, and challenges related to vessel maintenance and safety protocols.
The Indian embassy in Vietnam confirmed the incident and stated that details were still being verified as investigations continued. Officials from both countries are working to address the immediate needs of survivors and families affected by the tragedy.
