A 15-year-old male has been arrested and charged in connection with a shooting that wounded 11 people following the Florida A&M University homecoming football game on Saturday night. The incident occurred near Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida, shortly after the university’s game against the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
Authorities identified the suspect as Anthony Rivers III. He was taken into custody on Sunday and faces 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a delinquent. State Attorney Jack Campbell announced that Rivers will be prosecuted as an adult. Rivers appeared in court Monday and was ordered to remain in custody pending further proceedings.
The shooting followed an altercation involving a small group of individuals who were reportedly acquainted. Preliminary investigations suggest the shooting was not directed at any of the victims, who included six minors, with the youngest being 11 years old. Among the injured, several suffered serious wounds; six victims, including one in critical condition, remained hospitalized as of Sunday. In addition to those struck by gunfire, a grandmother of one of the victims sustained injuries while fleeing the scene.
Police Chief Lawrence Revell reported that the area was densely crowded with attendees leaving the homecoming festivities, making it difficult for emergency vehicles to access the wounded. Officers helped carry victims through the crowd to awaiting ambulances. Video footage circulated on social media showed panic and chaos as people fled the area.
Investigators are continuing to search for additional evidence and witnesses. Police have established a tip hotline and a website for the public to provide information. Authorities indicated that more arrests are possible as the investigation proceeds.
Florida A&M University, a historically Black institution with an enrollment near 10,000 students, held homecoming events throughout the week that culminated in the football game and subsequent shooting. The university issued a statement expressing condolences to the victims and those affected. Tallahassee Police characterized the night’s violence as a tragic disruption to what was intended to be a celebratory occasion.
Detectives said they are working to determine the underlying cause of the initial fight that led to the shooting. The investigation remains active as officials seek to understand the full scope of involvement and prevent further escalation.
