Innsbruck, Austria — At one of Europe’s few remaining traditional bell foundries, artisans are blending centuries-old craftsmanship with advanced technology to sustain their industry. The Grassmayr Bell Foundry, established in 1599 in Innsbruck, continues to produce large bronze bells for churches across Italy, Germany, Romania, and beyond.
The family-run business, now managed by brothers Johannes and Peter Grassmayr, has endured significant historical challenges, including wars, famines, and economic shifts. While many bell foundries that once flourished throughout Europe during the Renaissance have since vanished, Grassmayr remains a rare survivor. The company credits its longevity to a combination of resilience and technological innovation.
“We retained certain traditional methods used over 400 years ago, but we have innovated a lot,” Johannes Grassmayr explained. The foundry employs modern tools such as 3D printing, laser scanning, and computer simulation applications to refine the bell-casting process. These technologies have notably shortened production times; for example, cleaning and polishing a freshly cast bell, which previously accounted for about 30% of production time, now takes only a fraction of that duration.
Despite technological advancements, the making of a large bell remains a painstaking and delicate process. The design and formation of molds can take up to six months. A primary challenge lies in withstanding the immense pressure exerted by molten bronze, which can reach as high as 137 tons during casting. To address this, the foundry uses high-quality clay molds reinforced with steel bands capable of withstanding such extreme forces.
Johannes Grassmayr emphasized the fine balance between artistic and acoustic considerations: “The important thing is that you calculate, form and then cast the bell as a musical instrument.” The company also guards closely guarded techniques, such as a high-pressure sandblasting chamber for cleaning bells and proprietary software for precise sound calculations.
While technological advances have improved efficiency and product quality, the bell-making industry faces ongoing challenges. Declining church construction has reduced demand. Additionally, the foundry has grappled with rising operational costs. Energy expenses have surged amid the war in Ukraine, and labor costs have increased approximately 30% since the 2020 pandemic onset. However, the most significant financial burden remains the cost of bronze, an alloy composed of roughly 80% copper and 20% tin. Prices have nearly tripled in recent years, from $9.23 per kilogram several years ago to $26.17 today.
Johannes expressed uncertainty about future pricing but remains hopeful: “I just hope the metal price is going to come down again.” Recently cast bells currently cooling at the foundry include one destined for a church in Zethau, Germany. “I’m very happy with the casting,” Johannes said. “I’m especially happy that the innovations of the past decades helped a lot to make the bells ever more beautiful and better.”
