A fire early Tuesday morning at the Saratoga Casino Hotel Harness Track barn resulted in the deaths of 17 horses, authorities confirmed. The blaze broke out around 2:30 a.m., rapidly engulfing the barn where 18 horses were housed. Emergency responders were able to evacuate several animals from nearby structures, but the fire’s rapid progression made rescue efforts challenging.
One horse successfully escaped the barn on its own. Trainer Robyn Mangiardi lost 11 horses in the fire, while trainer Timothy Benson's six horses perished, according to official statements. The Saratoga Springs Fire Department described the blaze as an “advanced fire” upon arrival, underscoring the speed and severity of the incident.
Saratoga Casino Hotel CEO Sam Gerrity expressed condolences to those affected, calling the loss “heartbreaking” for the racing community. Gerrity also extended gratitude to security personnel, first responders, and racing staff who acted swiftly to protect other horses and individuals in adjacent barns. There were no reported injuries among firefighters or civilians.
It is important to note that the Saratoga Casino Hotel is not associated with the well-known Saratoga Race Course located across the street. The nearby track, famous for hosting the Travers Stakes, is temporarily accommodating the Belmont Stakes while Belmont Park undergoes renovations. The fire at the casino hotel’s harness track has drawn attention to the vulnerability of facilities housing racehorses and raised concerns about fire safety protocols in such environments.
