A group of 174 undocumented Bangladeshi nationals voluntarily returned to Bangladesh from Libya on Wednesday morning, landing at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 5:40 a.m. The individuals arrived on a Buraq Airlines flight from Tripoli.

The repatriation effort was carried out with the cooperation of the Libyan government, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and coordinated by Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, and the Bangladeshi Embassy in Libya.

Many of the returnees reportedly initially traveled to Libya after being enticed by human traffickers with the promise of clandestine passage to Europe by sea. While in Libya, numerous individuals said they were subjected to kidnapping and torture under various circumstances.

Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and related agencies, accompanied by IOM representatives, met the returnees upon their arrival. Authorities urged the returnees to share their experiences in order to raise public awareness about the risks associated with irregular migration and human trafficking networks.

The repatriation reflects ongoing efforts by Bangladeshi and international agencies to address the challenges faced by migrants trapped in conflict zones and exploitative conditions abroad.
