Two dogs were rescued after a van plunged into the Pacific Ocean near Malibu on October 3, authorities reported. The vehicle lost control and struck several rocks along Highway 1 near Deer Creek before coming to rest partially submerged in the water.

The driver managed to escape the crash with one dog, but a second dog remained trapped inside the vehicle, according to the Ventura County Fire Department. Emergency responders, including firefighters and California State Parks lifeguards, worked together to reach the submerged van and safely free the trapped animal. Video footage captured waves washing over the wreckage as responders carried out the rescue.

Both dogs were brought to safety on the roadway and appeared to have sustained no serious injuries. The Fire Department noted in a statement that neither dog showed signs of major harm. However, a photo from the scene showed one of the dogs with blood on its hind leg, while the other appeared visibly relieved after being reunited with its companion.

One person involved in the crash suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. The response to the incident involved multiple agencies, including the Ventura County Fire Department, Federal Fire Ventura County, California State Parks lifeguards, Gold Coast Ambulance, and the California Highway Patrol.

“This incident highlights the teamwork between VCFD and our area partners in responding to dynamic emergencies requiring all of our collective training,” the Fire Department said. The coordinated effort ensured a timely rescue in challenging conditions along a notoriously hazardous stretch of coast.
