The United Arab Emirates’ National Media Authority (NMA) announced legal action against two individuals for broadcasting offensive content during a live social media session that was deemed disrespectful to the country’s culture. The violations were found to contravene the UAE’s standards on civilisational heritage, national identity, and societal values, the authority said in a statement on Monday.

One of the individuals also faced a three-month suspension of their publicity permit as part of the penalties imposed. The NMA emphasized that it will not tolerate the misuse of digital platforms to disseminate content intended to generate views or engagement at the expense of social harmony, national principles, or cultural respect.

The authority underscored the importance of adhering to media content standards that uphold respect for religious beliefs, cultural heritage, national unity, the ruling system, and the country’s foreign relations. In addition, it highlighted the necessity of combating misinformation, protecting privacy, respecting security regulations, and following legal frameworks and official state directives.

Legal experts in the UAE have previously cautioned residents that even seemingly minor comments or posts can lead to police investigations if they infringe upon these established standards.

Media and online content in the UAE are primarily regulated under two key laws. The Media Regulation Law sets out the rights and responsibilities of media institutions and professionals, promoting responsible freedom of expression as long as it aligns with legal and societal norms. Meanwhile, the Combating Rumours and Cybercrimes Law criminalizes the spread of false information and offenses against individuals or the state through electronic means. This legislation aims to protect state security, maintain social stability, and safeguard the privacy and reputation of both individuals and national institutions.

The recent enforcement actions reaffirm the UAE government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that digital platforms are used responsibly and in accordance with national values and legal requirements.
