Two people were killed and seven others, including two Chicago police officers, were wounded in separate shooting incidents across Chicago during the Independence Day weekend, according to authorities.
On Friday evening around 5 p.m., two officers were shot during a traffic stop in the South Shore neighborhood. Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said the officers—identified as Carl Williams, 27, and Esteban Cervantes, 30—sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended in the 7900 block of South Chappel Avenue. During a struggle, the suspect pulled a gun from a bag and shot Williams in his protective vest. Williams returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. Cervantes was also shot during the incident; authorities are investigating whether his injury was caused by friendly fire. The suspect remained in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Earlier on Friday, a 52-year-old man was found dead with head injuries in the 1900 block of South Canalport Avenue in the Pilsen neighborhood around 4:50 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
In a separate incident early Saturday morning in the Portage Park area, a 47-year-old woman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police reported that the woman had disarmed a man involved in an argument before shooting herself in the head in the 5000 block of West Sunnyside Avenue around 3:30 a.m. She was transported to a hospital where she later died. Police are treating the case as a homicide investigation.
In addition to these deaths, at least four other individuals were injured in shootings between Thursday evening and Saturday morning:
- A 31-year-old man was shot in the leg on the 7200 block of South Green Street at approximately 9:55 p.m. Thursday and was hospitalized in stable condition.
- Minutes later, a 51-year-old man was shot in the arm during an argument in the 6500 block of South Claremont Avenue. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
- On Friday around 8:35 p.m., an 18-year-old man was shot in the buttocks while walking in the 6000 block of South Indiana Avenue. The shooter was reportedly part of a nearby group. The victim was hospitalized in fair condition.
- Early Saturday morning near 6 a.m., a 54-year-old man was shot in the hip and thigh following a dispute in the 7900 block of South Ashland Avenue. He was also in fair condition at the hospital.
Chicago police continue their investigations into these incidents as the city mourns those lost and responds to ongoing concerns about violence during the holiday weekend.
