Two Boston police officers were hospitalized following a physical confrontation during the arrest of a Cambridge man accused of multiple assaults and attempted attacks on dogs in a South End park on Monday evening. Authorities reported that the officers’ injuries were not life-threatening.
The incident began around 5:25 p.m. in Blackstone Square when police responded to calls of an assault in progress. Witnesses described a masked man assaulting individuals and attempting to kick several dogs within the park. Bystanders later identified the suspect as 26-year-old Sharkell Tariq Matthews.
According to police, Matthews walked away upon their arrival, ignoring commands to display his hands. Outside an apartment building on West Newton Street, officers said Matthews rolled up his sleeves, took a fighting stance, and attempted to enter the building. The ensuing attempt to prevent him from entering led to a physical struggle during which Matthews allegedly punched one officer in the face.
One of the officers then deployed a taser, temporarily incapacitating Matthews. However, police reported that he soon recovered and resumed resisting arrest, engaging in further fighting with the officers. Additional police and bystanders assisted in detaining Matthews.
Witness statements indicated Matthews had attempted to rob several people in the park. Police said he threatened a woman walking her dog with a statement that he “would kill her.” He also allegedly knocked a man’s cellphone away and fled with it, followed by an incident in which he demanded another man’s watch. When the man refused, Matthews reportedly pursued him further into the park, where he shoved him to the ground and punched him in the face.
Matthews faces multiple charges, including two counts of assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery on an elderly person, resisting arrest, and unarmed assault to rob. He is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday in Boston Municipal Court. Matthews was taken to a local hospital for evaluation following his arrest.
At this time, a legal representative for Matthews could not be reached for comment.
