The 2027 Cricket World Cup qualification process will culminate in a 10-team ODI Qualifier tournament scheduled to take place from February 22 to March 23, 2027. While the International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed the dates, the host venue has not yet been announced. This event will determine direct entry and further progression opportunities for the upcoming 14-team World Cup, set to be held from October 4 to November 21, 2027, across 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Under the ICC's revised qualification structure for the 2027 World Cup, the winner of the Qualifier will gain direct entry to the group stage of the main tournament. Teams finishing second, third, and fourth in the Qualifier will advance to a preliminary phase called the Super Series. In this opening stage, these three sides will compete alongside pre-qualified teams for the final spot in the 12-team main phase, with only the top-ranked team securing progression.
The 10 teams that will compete in the Qualifier include the two lowest-ranked Full Member nations in the ODI rankings as of September 30, 2026, excluding host nations South Africa and Zimbabwe. These will be joined by the top four teams from the Cricket World Cup League 2 and the four qualifying sides from the Qualifier Playoff tournament.
The Qualifier Playoff is expected to feature eight teams: the bottom four ranked squads from League 2 and the top four from the Challenge League, which is cricket’s third tier. The exact format for the Playoff remains to be finalized, but the top four finishers will secure places in the main World Cup Qualifier.
The Challenge League itself consists of 12 teams split into two groups of six, each playing three round-robin tournaments during the qualification cycle. The top two teams from each group advance to the Qualifier Playoff.
Currently, West Indies stand 10th in the ODI rankings ahead of the September 30 cutoff and have two remaining matches against India in September. Their qualification prospects depend not only on their own results but also on the outcomes of a closely ranked series between Afghanistan (eighth) and Ireland (12th). Should Ireland win the upcoming five-match series 4-1 or 5-0, two wins for West Indies against India could be enough to elevate them into the top eight, securing a direct route to the Qualifier and bypassing the Playoff. However, an Afghan series victory would likely force West Indies to enter the qualification pathway.
West Indies failed to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup after a narrow Super Over defeat to the Netherlands in the Qualifier in Harare, ending their chance to reach that tournament. The 2027 qualification cycle provides them and other teams a renewed pathway to the World Cup through this revamped structure.
