A fire on a cargo ship docked in the eastern Chinese port city of Qingdao has resulted in the deaths of 25 people, according to state media reports on Thursday. The vessel, identified as the Ocean Melody and registered under the Liberian flag, had 42 crew members on board at the time of the incident.
Rescue teams managed to save 12 individuals, while five others were hospitalized for treatment. Earlier reports had listed five crew members as missing, but these individuals were later confirmed dead. The cause of the fire aboard the freighter remained unknown as of Thursday evening.
State television footage showed the Ocean Melody at a dock with fire trucks positioned near the vessel as rescue operations continued. Efforts to extinguish the blaze and search for any remaining victims were ongoing.
Authorities have not yet released detailed information about the circumstances that led to the fire. Investigations are expected to follow as officials work to determine the origin and spread of the incident.
