England is poised to record its highest number of heat-related deaths this summer, with an estimated 2,877 fatalities linked to heatwaves in May and June, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). This figure nearly doubles the 1,504 heat-associated deaths recorded during the entire summer of 2025 and approaches the previous peak of 2,985 deaths documented during five heatwaves in 2022.
The May heatwave from the 24th to the 27th was associated with approximately 753 deaths, while the June event from the 21st to the 28th accounted for around 2,124 fatalities. These estimates measure excess mortality attributed to unusually high temperatures compared with expected death rates during similar periods without significant heat.
Experts have highlighted that certain populations, especially older adults and individuals with preexisting health conditions, are particularly susceptible to heat-related illness and death. While UKHSA's current report does not provide an age breakdown, prior assessments have consistently shown these groups are at elevated risk.
The extreme weather has also placed significant pressure on healthcare services. The Royal College of General Practitioners has urged medical practices to consider the operational challenges posed by indoor temperatures rising above 30°C, including potential closures or relocations to ensure staff and patient safety.
Amid the ongoing heatwaves, emergency services have faced increased demand. Ambulance services reported record numbers of calls, and hospital systems have been strained by the surge in heat-related cases. Health Secretary Yvette Cooper acknowledged the severe impact of the heat on public health and the National Health Service, expressing gratitude to frontline workers managing the heightened workload.
Environmental scientists warn that the intensity and frequency of heatwaves are likely to intensify due to climate change driven by fossil fuel emissions. The recent heatwave in Europe was described as the most severe and widespread on record. The situation is expected to worsen with the influence of a developing super El Niño phenomenon, which may contribute to further temperature increases in 2027 if carbon emissions are not curtailed.
In addition to the human toll, extreme heat has led to natural disasters, including a major wildfire on Dunwich Heath in Suffolk that required over 100 firefighters and the evacuation of 200 caravans and several homes. The devastation to the heathland is projected to take decades to recover. Moreover, a drought has been declared across the entirety of Wales, with July poised to be the driest month in 190 years of record-keeping.
The Met Office forecasts that August will likely be hotter and drier than usual, underscoring concerns about continued heat risks. While cooler temperatures and some rainfall are predicted over the weekend, these conditions are not expected to alleviate drought conditions in the most affected regions.
Health officials emphasize the critical need for preparedness at individual, community, and systemic levels to mitigate the dangers posed by rising temperatures and to protect the most vulnerable members of society as the climate continues to warm.
