Three children died Friday after a recreational boat capsized on Geneva Lake in Wisconsin amid a sudden severe storm, authorities said. Despite all four children on board wearing life jackets, three were recovered unresponsive following an extensive search and resuscitation efforts.
The privately owned motorboat, carrying six adults and four children, encountered rapidly deteriorating weather conditions while on the lake. According to a statement from the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the vessel attempted to outrun the storm but was overtaken by strong winds and waves, which caused it to take on water before capsizing and sinking.
Six adults and one child were rescued from the water unharmed. The three children who died were found by rescue teams but did not respond to lifesaving interventions.
The incident highlights the unpredictable nature of extreme weather events and the dangers they pose to recreational activities. Local authorities emphasized the sudden onset and intensity of the storm, which generated conditions hazardous to all vessels on the lake.
Beyond the boating tragedy, the storm resulted in widespread damage throughout Walworth County. Trees were uprooted, power lines brought down, and structural damage to buildings was reported. Tom Hausner, undersheriff of the Walworth County Sheriff’s Department, said emergency services received numerous 911 calls from residents trapped or in need of assistance due to storm-related damage.
The investigation into the exact circumstances of the boat capsizing remains ongoing, led by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in coordination with local enforcement agencies. Officials have urged vigilance during rapidly shifting weather conditions to enhance safety on the water.
