An Israeli strike on a university in Gaza City on Sunday resulted in the deaths of three people and injured several others, local authorities and hospital officials reported. Al Shifa hospital confirmed receiving three bodies and treating eight wounded individuals following a drone attack targeting the campus. According to two sources at the Islamic University, those killed were administrative staff members, while the injured were students attending classes at the time of the strike.

The attack marked at least the second time the university and its immediate surroundings were hit on the same day. Gaza’s Ministry of Education condemned the airstrike, highlighting the presence of students during the incident and condemning what it described as ongoing assaults on Palestinian educational institutions. The ministry criticized the lack of international response, stating that global silence encourages further attacks. It added that the higher education sector in Gaza is facing near destruction, with approximately 95% of academic buildings reportedly damaged amid the current conflict.

In addition to the casualties at the university, Gaza’s civil defense agency reported further fatalities elsewhere in the territory, although figures varied slightly between sources, with at least four to five additional deaths noted.

The education ministry also characterized Sunday’s strike as part of a "continuous series of attacks on education," pointing out that in the past six days, ten students and educators have been killed in related incidents. The university itself issued a statement expressing mourning for the victims and condemning the repeated targeting of its facilities during the ongoing hostilities.

Israeli authorities have not publicly commented on the specific strike targeting the university. The broader conflict in Gaza has seen numerous airstrikes aimed at various locations, with both sides reporting casualties and damage that impact civilian infrastructure, including educational institutions.

The situation remains volatile, and the international community continues to monitor the situation closely amid concerns over the humanitarian impact of the conflict on Gaza’s civilian population and infrastructure.
