The San Francisco 49ers secured their sixth consecutive victory to begin the season, edging the Washington Commanders 23-17 in Monday night’s NFL matchup. The game took place in San Francisco and marked a continuation of the 49ers’ strong start, their best since opening with eight straight wins in 2019.
Quarterback Brock Purdy contributed a touchdown pass, while running back Christian McCaffrey scored twice on the ground, helping San Francisco build an early commanding lead. The 49ers gained a 20-point advantage before the Commanders rallied in the second half. Washington’s backup quarterback, Jayden Daniels, threw two touchdown passes, narrowing the gap to six points.
Despite the late surge, the 49ers’ defense made critical stops down the stretch to preserve the victory. Malik Mustapha disrupted a fourth-down pass near the goal line with under two minutes left, stalling Washington’s attempt to take the lead. The Commanders mounted one final drive from their own 46-yard line with less than a minute remaining but faltered on an intentional grounding penalty and subsequent sacks by San Francisco’s Keion White and Ogbo Okoronkwo, ending the game.
Washington’s season struggles continued as they fell to 1-4-1, unable to overcome early deficits for their sixth game without a win. The team suffered a significant blow with the loss of wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who sustained a torn left patellar tendon in the first half. Coach Dan Quinn confirmed on Tuesday that McLaurin will miss the remainder of the season and will undergo surgery.
The 49ers also faced injury concerns, with wide receiver Mike Evans exiting the game due to Achilles tendinitis. Despite this, San Francisco maintained their momentum as they pursue another playoff run following their 2019 appearance in the Super Bowl.
