MIAMI — Five people were killed when an Amazon cargo plane veered off the runway at Miami International Airport and struck a van transporting cleaning crews, authorities reported. The incident occurred Sunday as the jet was landing.

The aircraft overran the runway, crashing into the white van, which had its entire front end severely crushed. The plane then broke through a fence on the airport grounds before colliding with an SUV on a nearby city street. The SUV sustained extensive damage and was nearly unrecognizable at the scene.

Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz confirmed that all five victims inside the van died. They have been identified as Rolando Aleman Leon, 55; Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, 53; Julio C. Pineda, 75; Carlos Acosta Fajardo, 53; and Javieryks Reyes Quevedo, 47.

Five other individuals sustained injuries in the crash. The pilot and co-pilot were hospitalized but have since been released, the sheriff said. Of the remaining injured, two remain in critical condition, while one is stable.

The cargo jet bore markings associated with Amazon Prime Air and was found resting nose-down at the site, with a prominent soil mark visible near the company logo.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the accident. Among the areas under review is the absence of an adequate system to slow or stop aircraft that overrun runways, which may have contributed to the severity of the crash.

Authorities continue to examine the circumstances leading to the incident to determine its cause and to evaluate airport safety protocols.
