On September 9, 2026, Star Media Group (SMG) commemorated its 55th anniversary, marking more than five decades since its inception as a modest tabloid in Penang. The publication’s first issue, released in 1971, featured a straightforward legal story, reflecting its early focus on local news. Since then, the company has evolved alongside Malaysia, expanding well beyond its original print roots to become a multifaceted media organisation.
Over the years, SMG has grown from a regional newspaper into a prominent media conglomerate, encompassing various platforms including print, digital, radio, and event management. This expansion reflects broader changes in media consumption and technology, which have transformed how news is gathered and shared. Despite these technological shifts, the group emphasizes maintaining credibility and trust as central to its journalistic mission.
In a statement marking the milestone, Tan Sri Wong Foon Meng, chairman of Star Media Group, highlighted the enduring importance of objective and balanced journalism amid an era of rapid information dissemination and the challenges posed by misinformation. He underscored the need for media organisations to offer meaningful reporting that promotes deeper understanding and informs public discourse.
SMG’s current operations extend beyond news reporting to include fostering dialogue and community engagement. The group hosts various initiatives such as industry roundtables and community events aimed at connecting decision-makers, businesses, and citizens to address key issues facing the nation.
Among its notable programmes are the Star Outstanding Business Awards, ESG Positive Impact Awards, and StarProperty Awards, which promote business excellence and sustainability. Additionally, SMG administers social support efforts like the Star Education Fund and Medical Fund to assist those facing hardships, alongside recognising grassroots contributions through awards such as the Star Golden Hearts Award and Star Social Impact Grant.
The anniversary also served as an occasion to honour the dedication of SMG’s workforce, with long service awards recognising employees who have contributed 15 and 25 years to the organisation. Wong expressed gratitude to staff, management, readers, advertisers, and partners for their role in sustaining the group’s success.
Looking ahead, Star Media Group reaffirmed its commitment to evolving with Malaysia’s media landscape while continuing to serve as a trusted source of news, knowledge, and community connection. The company aims to remain relevant for future generations, fostering informed participation in the country’s ongoing development.
