Malaysians living in Qatar gathered on Friday for a 5-kilometer walkathon at Doha Festival City to mark the upcoming Independence Day of Malaysia. Organized by the Malaysian Association in Qatar (MAQ), the event aimed to foster a sense of unity, pride, and community among expatriates ahead of Malaysia’s National Day on August 31.

Malaysia’s ambassador to Qatar, Faizal Razali, attended the walkathon as the guest of honour, joining numerous members of the Malaysian community in the activity. The event was designed as a family-friendly occasion, inviting participants to walk together in a relaxed atmosphere that emphasized connection and fellowship.

The walkathon formed part of a broader series of activities scheduled by the Malaysian embassy and local associations throughout August and September. These programmes not only commemorate Independence Day but also Malaysia Day 2026, extending the celebrations and allowing greater community participation over several weeks.

According to the Malaysian embassy, the gathering underlined the strong spirit of togetherness within the community and provided an opportunity to strengthen ukhuwah, a Malay term referring to bonds of friendship and solidarity. The event offered expatriates a meaningful way to engage with Malaysian traditions and culture, particularly for younger generations who may be far from home.

Officials noted that such occasions help long-term residents maintain their cultural identity while integrating into Qatar’s diverse social environment. By engaging in shared activities like the walkathon, Malaysians in Qatar reinforce values of unity, mutual support, and national pride.

The event also highlighted the role of community associations in preserving cultural heritage abroad and promoting inclusive social participation. Participants walked side by side, creating a public display of collective identity and support within the expatriate population.

The embassy encouraged continued involvement in upcoming community programmes, underscoring the importance of sustaining national bonds among Malaysians residing overseas. The walkathon exemplified this commitment through its emphasis on collaboration and cultural celebration within the Qatari context.
