CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Will Grier’s professional football career has been marked by a series of transitions and limited playing time, yet it has now brought the quarterback back to his hometown with the Carolina Panthers. The 31-year-old has navigated multiple rosters over the past several years but has struggled to secure regular-season opportunities since starting two games in his rookie year in 2019.

Grier was selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Panthers, a class highlighted by linebacker Brian Burns. His initial stint with Carolina coincided with significant organizational changes, including the departure of coach Ron Rivera and quarterback Cam Newton, and the arrival of Matt Rhule in 2020. Grier’s on-field appearances were brief; he started the final two games of his rookie season, throwing four interceptions before a foot injury ended his campaign. Since then, he has not played in another regular-season NFL game.

After being waived by the Panthers in 2021, Grier was claimed by the Dallas Cowboys, beginning a nomadic journey through the league. His numerous moves included brief stops with the Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, and Philadelphia Eagles. In 2023, he was part of practice squads and active rosters, often stepping in as a backup or third-string quarterback. Despite limited game time, teammates and coaches have noted his valuable presence in the quarterback room, where he provides experience and helps prepare starters for competition.

Grier’s familiarity with offensive systems, particularly through connections like offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, has been credited with aiding younger quarterbacks such as Carolina’s Bryce Young and Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett. Eagles backup Pickett highlighted Grier’s role in offering insights and support during practices. Although he was released by the Eagles midway through the 2023 season, the team later invited him to their Super Bowl ring ceremony, recognizing his contribution to the squad.

Off the field, Grier has relied on the support of his wife, Jeanne, and their two daughters as his career has taken him to different cities. The family is now preparing for a more settled offseason base in Dallas, while he resides in Charlotte during the football season.

In April 2024, Grier signed a one-year contract to rejoin the Panthers, who currently have four quarterbacks on their roster, including starter Bryce Young and backup Kenny Pickett. Grier is expected to compete for playing time against undrafted free agent Haynes King, with both likely to see action in the upcoming Hall of Fame Game on August 6 in Canton, Ohio. Panthers coach Dave Canales emphasized the value of Grier’s experience and varied background, noting how such depth enriches the quarterback room and supports player development.

Despite the challenges of his NFL journey, Grier remains committed to his role and hopeful for future playing opportunities. “I’ll do it as long as I can,” he said, expressing readiness to contribute when called upon and confidence in his ability to perform. For his father, Chad Grier, a longtime high school coach and former East Carolina quarterback, Will’s return to Charlotte brings a sense of homecoming and renewed family moments amid the demands of professional football.

With eight hats from six NFL teams displayed in his father’s office, each representing a chapter in his career, Will Grier’s path reflects the perseverance often required of backup quarterbacks striving to make their mark in the league.
