Michael Carrick faces a significant challenge as Manchester United prepares to host Manchester City in the latest Premier League derby on Sunday. Eight months after initially taking charge as interim manager, Carrick’s appointment as permanent manager has raised expectations as his rebuilding efforts enter a critical phase.
Carrick, who guided United to a third-place finish last season, ended his debut derby in January with a victory over City, but the current campaign has started less convincingly. United has claimed only one win from its opening three league matches—a 1-0 victory over Ipswich—while suffering a loss at Hull City and settling for a draw at Everton. Despite a commanding 4-0 victory over Sabah in midweek Champions League action, Carrick acknowledges the upcoming contest against City will serve as a key indicator of progress.
“There’s no way we’re assuming ‘We won last year, we can do the same things and everything will be the same’,” Carrick said ahead of Sunday’s match. He emphasized the increased expectations surrounding the fixture compared to his initial tenure, when the team’s trajectory was still uncertain. “The confidence we’ve built over a period of time, and the feeling that we’re getting better all the time, I think that helps us,” he added, stressing the importance of the game.
Carrick’s management last season was marked by a strong record of 12 wins in 17 Premier League games with only two defeats, which raised hopes that the club’s upward momentum could be sustained. However, defensive vulnerabilities and an uneven start to the new campaign have tempered optimism. The manager maintains that the current phase is part of a longer-term strategy aimed at restoring Manchester United’s status.
“All the decisions we were making were as if we were going to be here for a period of time,” Carrick said. “You’re always planning for what we want the future to look like and the direction we want to go, and that was from day one.”
Opposite Carrick, Manchester City’s new manager Enzo Maresca will take charge of his first Manchester derby since succeeding Pep Guardiola. Maresca has overseen a strong start to the post-Guardiola era, with City unbeaten in all competitions so far.
Maresca described derby matches as uniquely intense experiences. “The worst one is Olympiacos vs Panathinaikos. That is very hot,” he remarked, referencing a fierce rivalry from his playing career. He also mentioned his involvement in other high-profile derbies with Juventus and Sevilla.
“The most important thing is the players are focused,” Maresca added, underlining the mental approach required in such high-stakes encounters. Both teams will look to assert dominance as the derby remains a pivotal fixture in the Premier League calendar.
