Malaysia’s government is calling for strengthened collaboration between industry stakeholders and public authorities to enhance the country’s shopping tourism sector as part of efforts to promote Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).
Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing emphasized the importance of close cooperation among shopping mall operators, retailers, hoteliers, travel agents, and other relevant parties to create more appealing and memorable experiences for visitors. His remarks were delivered by Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Chiew Choon Man during the Malaysia Shopping Malls Association Awards Gala Dinner held recently in Petaling Jaya.
Tiong highlighted that shopping has become a significant element of Malaysia’s tourism industry. He noted that modern shopping malls now serve as multifaceted destinations that combine retail with lifestyle, culture, food, and entertainment, offering visitors experiences that extend well beyond conventional shopping. This evolution aligns with the government’s aim under VM2026 to position Malaysia as a leading shopping destination in the region.
“Shopping tourism is not only about what visitors buy, but also about the experiences and memories they make,” Tiong said.
The minister underscored the role of major sales campaigns such as the Malaysia Mega Sale and Malaysia Year-End Sale, which are designed to boost both foreign tourist and domestic spending. These events also provide opportunities for local businesses, retailers, and creative talents to showcase their products and offerings to a wider audience.
In addition, festive celebrations and cultural activities held at shopping malls are seen as effective platforms to introduce visitors to Malaysia’s diverse heritage, customs, cuisine, arts, and lifestyles.
Tiong further encouraged shopping destinations to continually enhance their services, convenience, and innovation in order to remain competitive and attract an increasing number of both domestic and international shoppers.
These initiatives form part of a broader strategy aimed at maximizing Malaysia’s appeal as a comprehensive tourism hub by integrating retail with cultural and lifestyle experiences.
