John B.G.P.S. de Silva, a respected jurist and long-time legal professional in Sri Lanka, passed away on August 31 at the age of 91. Known affectionately as GPS, he had a career spanning decades marked by his dedication to the law and his reputation for fairness and integrity.

Born into a prominent family in Galle, De Silva was the son of a senator and former justice minister. He received his early education at Richmond College in Galle and St. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia before enrolling in the Arts Faculty at the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya. He later qualified as an Advocate of the Supreme Court and established himself as a notable lecturer on administrative law.

De Silva’s professional journey was strongly connected to the Attorney-General’s Department, where he distinguished himself as a Senior State Counsel and earned respect for his legal acumen and courteous demeanor. His skills were particularly noted in courtrooms across the country, where he often guided junior lawyers and maintained respectful relations with judges and colleagues.

On February 21, 1984, De Silva attained a significant career milestone when he was appointed as a judge of the Court of Appeal. Colleagues recall the announcement being made just as he was presenting a case, underscoring the esteem in which he was held. His judicial tenure was characterized by patient hearings and well-reasoned, meticulously drafted judgments delivered in precise English.

Following his judicial career, which culminated in serving as Chief Justice, De Silva remained active in the legal field by chairing arbitration tribunals. His integrity was so widely recognized that he willingly recused himself from cases where questions of corruption arose, reinforcing his commitment to impartiality and ethical conduct.

De Silva’s family includes his wife, Sujatha, and two daughters, Ishani and Swanthi, both medical specialists based in the United States. In the final years of his life, he suffered from injuries sustained in a fall, which left him bedridden and in chronic pain. Despite these challenges, he maintained close relationships with former colleagues and friends.

Throughout his career and personal life, De Silva was remembered for his humility, gentleness, and unwavering principles. His passing marks the conclusion of a remarkable legal career and a life dedicated to public service and justice.
