“The Devil’s Mouth,” a new shark thriller directed by Jeff Wadlow and written by Aja Gabel and Myung Joh Wesner, debuted Wednesday on Amazon Prime Video. The film emerges amid Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week, adding a fresh entry to the genre with a distinctive setting and a menacing antagonist — a giant bull shark capable of surviving in both saltwater and freshwater environments.
Set in Thailand, the story follows a group of five recent college graduates celebrating their achievements with a boat trip and an excursion into the titular caves, known as the Devil’s Mouth. The group dynamic centers around Max, portrayed by Lana Condor (“To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”), who assumes the role of confident and risk-taking leader. Alongside her is Sara (Kathryn Newton, “Big Little Lies”), Max’s more cautious best friend and girlfriend to James (Nico Hiraga). Their companions, Adrienne (Tommi Rose) and her temporary boyfriend Greg (Gavin Casalegno), complete the ensemble.
Tensions arise early as Max pushes the group to explore a more challenging and dangerous route through the caves, despite warnings from their local guide, Wat (Tayme Thapthimthong).
