In 2012, a Sydney-based cultural commentator embarked on an unexpected journey into the world of guided tours, co-leading a group of active seniors on a cultural expedition to New York City. Initially involved in Sydney’s theatrical political satire scene and working with the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the opportunity arose through a colleague who invited the writer to co-lead an art- and theatre-focused tour to Manhattan.

Arriving in New York during the depths of winter, the group consisted of approximately 25 participants, described as an older, culturally engaged demographic eager to explore the city's numerous artistic institutions and landmarks. The tour itinerary was extensive, covering major venues such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and its Cloisters branch, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Frick Collection, the Whitney Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Guggenheim Museum. The group also experienced entertainment venues like Radio City Music Hall and took in half a dozen theatrical productions.

An additional highlight was a backstage tour of the Metropolitan Opera, led by a volunteer guide who reportedly financed the opportunity to conduct such tours, underscoring the passion surrounding the arts in the city. The itinerary also included multiple bus tours traversing Manhattan, guided by a local expert named Frederique.

Despite the demanding schedule, the tour participants demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm and stamina, showcasing the vigorous cultural appetite of active seniors. After ten days of non-stop engagement, the guide noted that even the most dedicated travelers needed rest.

The initial success of the 2012 trip led to further tours in subsequent years. In 2014, the guide and Frederique co-led excursions to Chicago and back to New York. By 2016, the writer was leading solo tours to New York and Philadelphia. Although details beyond 2016 were not provided, the experience marked a significant shift in the writer’s professional focus, blending a passion for the arts with travel and cultural education for older adults.
