Datin Kalsom Taib, a respected columnist and advocate for Malaysia’s culinary heritage, has launched her memoir, *A Life Reimagined*, at an event in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. The 84-year-old author, known primarily for her food writing, offered a candid account of her life’s journey, sharing reflections that extend beyond her well-known passion for cuisine.
The memoir was officially launched by her husband, Datuk Shafee Yahaya, and gathers insights from her early years through to her later life experiences. Born and raised in Muar, Johor, during the Japanese Occupation in the 1940s, Kalsom recounts her childhood amid wartime challenges, following which she pursued studies and a career in education before transitioning into human resource management. Her later shift into writing and publishing marked a significant and unexpected chapter, developing her public persona especially within Malaysia’s food culture.
In the memoir, Kalsom describes the process of writing about herself as particularly challenging, emphasizing the honesty and introspection required. Previously, she had written biographies for her family members, but turning the pen toward her own story demanded a different level of reflection. “I did not write this book because I believed my life was extraordinary,” she writes, “I wrote it because I believe every ordinary life contains stories worth preserving.”
The book explores both the milestones and hardships that shaped her, presenting a narrative of perseverance and evolution. Kalsom hopes her recollections will encourage readers to embrace continuous growth and learning, regardless of age. Despite considering *A Life Reimagined* possibly her final book, she revealed plans for a forthcoming third edition of *My Malaysian Food Journey*, a collection of her columns from StarLifestyle, aimed at safeguarding her work from fading into obscurity.
Kalsom explained that preserving her stories in book form ensures a tangible legacy that endures beyond the ephemeral nature of newspaper publications. She noted the encouragement she receives from readers keeps her motivated to continue sharing her experiences. “I’ll always be a storyteller, it’s the teacher in me,” she said.
*A Life Reimagined* is now available at major bookstores across Malaysia, including Kinokuniya and MPH, adding a personal narrative to Kalsom Taib’s rich portfolio of contributions to Malaysian cultural storytelling.
