NAGOYA, Japan — Japan's Olympic Committee acknowledged on October 3 that the number of athletes and officials attending the ongoing Asian Games exceeded initial expectations, resulting in accommodation shortages and logistical challenges. The Games, which began on September 19 and conclude on October 4, have been marked by a series of organizational difficulties, including lodging issues and transportation delays.

Local organizers had anticipated hosting around 15,000 athletes and officials for the event in Aichi-Nagoya. However, figures from the Olympic Council of Asia indicated that more than 17,000 participants arrived, placing additional pressure on available resources. Japanese Olympic Committee president Seiko Hashimoto confirmed the discrepancy, stating that the higher-than-expected turnout contributed to accommodation problems and other inconveniences faced by competitors.

In an effort to reduce costs, the host city decided against constructing a dedicated athletes’ village. Instead, participants were housed across multiple venues, including temporary wooden container facilities, a cruise ship docked at Nagoya’s port, and various hotels. Some teams reported arriving to find insufficient rooms, exacerbating the strain on the organizers.

Transportation issues have also plagued the event since its inception. Complaints from several delegations cited buses failing to arrive on schedule or delivering athletes to incorrect locations. Additionally, some teams experienced lengthy waits of up to six hours at Nagoya airport upon arrival, further complicating their experience.

Attendance at several competitions and the opening ceremony fell substantially short of expectations, with many events taking place in largely empty venues. Hashimoto attributed some of the challenges, including poor turnout, to adverse weather conditions throughout the Games, such as persistent rain and the looming threat of a typhoon.

Despite these difficulties, Hashimoto described the Games as a valuable learning experience for Japan's future hosting of major sports events. She emphasized the need for a thorough review of all aspects of the event to identify areas for improvement. Organizers have expressed determination to analyze the issues comprehensively to enhance the management of forthcoming international competitions in the country.
