In 2023, a woman faced a series of personal challenges that culminated in a transformative experience during a family trip to Ireland’s highest peak, Carrauntoohil. After a difficult breakup early in the year and subsequent struggles with mental health and fertility issues, she found herself overwhelmed by loss and uncertainty about the future.
The woman had planned to focus on her career for stability, but faced multiple setbacks including anxiety and writer’s block, which led her to take an extended leave from work. She sought healing through various therapies and a five-week wellness retreat in Thailand but did not find the relief she hoped for. Emotional pain persisted, and she feared being trapped in her own anger and sadness indefinitely.
In September, her father’s 63rd birthday prompted a family outing to climb Carrauntoohil, located in County Kerry. The family—her parents, herself, and her sister and brother-in-law—undertook the climb via the challenging Devil’s Ladder route. Though initially fatigued and still burdened by her emotional struggles, the woman noticed a slight uplift as the outdoor activity brought some respite.
However, near the descent, the situation took a sudden turn as her mother fell from a significant height, tumbling down the slope and striking a stone outcrop. Immediate reactions were marked by fear and uncertainty. Family members rushed to her side, grappling with the possibility that she might have been fatally injured.
Fortunately, the woman’s mother remained conscious, though severely injured with bleeding and a large wound on her forehead. Rescue efforts involved a helicopter airlift to a hospital, while the rest of the family was escorted down the mountain by the Kerry mountain rescue team.
The incident prompted a profound shift in perspective for the woman. In the moments of crisis, the personal grief and setbacks she had carried throughout the year suddenly felt less overwhelming. The realisation that her mother’s survival was paramount helped her reframe her losses, not as definitive ruin but as challenges to be faced and overcome.
Reflecting on the experience, she acknowledged that while the accident did not magically resolve all her difficulties, it offered a renewed sense of hope and the opportunity to start anew. The event underscored the fragility of life and the importance of prioritising those we love, providing a turning point in her journey toward healing.
