Melbourne is poised to host one of the largest crowds in the history of State of Origin rugby league when Game 2 of the 2024 series takes place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on June 17. Ticket sales indicate that attendance could exceed 92,000, potentially setting a new record for an Origin match and ranking as the third-largest crowd ever for Australian rugby league.

This surge in demand follows New South Wales’ narrow 22-20 victory over Queensland in Game 1 held in Sydney last week, which has fueled interest ahead of the next encounter at the MCG. The current record for a State of Origin game stands at 91,513, set at the same venue in 2015 when the Blues defeated Queensland 26-18 in Game 2. In 2024, the MCG hosted a crowd of 90,084 for Game 3, where New South Wales won 38-18.

If weather conditions cooperate, the attendance for Game 2 could surpass previous Origin records and approach the MCG’s full capacity of 100,000. Approximately 4,000 tickets were sold within a single day following the thrilling opening match, reflecting the strong public interest. The National Rugby League (NRL) chief executive Andrew Abdo noted the high demand, particularly highlighting that the game in Brisbane scheduled for later in the series is nearly sold out.

Corporate hospitality packages for the MCG match have reportedly been completely snapped up, underscoring the commercial appetite alongside fan enthusiasm. Among general ticket holders, New South Wales supporters have acquired about 56 percent of available seats in the venue's designated supporter areas, with Queensland members accounting for 44 percent.

Although the 100,000-seat capacity will not be fully utilized for this game, the anticipated turnout would still rank highly among notable Australian rugby league crowds. The highest recorded attendance was the 1999 NRL grand final at what is now Accor Stadium, where Melbourne defeated St George Illawarra 20-18 before 107,999 spectators. Additionally, a double-header match earlier in 1999 at Stadium Australia drew 104,583 fans.

Broadcast interest remains strong, with over 300,000 viewers tuning in on Channel 9 for the first Origin game at the MCG in 2024. As New South Wales aims to secure a 2-0 series lead at the MCG, the NRL is anticipating not only a record crowd but also a significant global television audience drawn by the enduring rivalry between the Blues and Maroons.
