Ilona Maher, the U.S. women’s rugby sevens player and podcaster, recently shared insights into her favorite spots in her hometown of Burlington, Vermont, reflecting her deep connection to the city where she grew up. Maher, who helped lead the U.S. team to a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, has also gained recognition outside athletics, finishing as the runner-up on the fall 2024 season of “Dancing With the Stars” and pursuing podcasting and streaming ventures.
Although currently based in San Diego, Maher frequently returns to Burlington to visit family and enjoy the region’s seasonal offerings. Her childhood includes memorable experiences such as a birthday party held in a local grocery store, Hannaford, where her mother organized a tour of the bakery and produce departments. Even today, she maintains an affection for grocery stores and often stops by familiar places like Hannaford and TJ Maxx during visits.
Maher highlighted several Burlington locations that hold personal significance. Hen of the Wood, a well-regarded farm-to-table restaurant known for its rustic ambiance and wood fireplace, is a frequent family dining spot. She praises the quality of its offerings, including the oysters served during happy hour and Parker House rolls paired with honey butter.
Foam Brewers, an East Burlington microbrewery near Waterfront Park, is another favored location, despite Maher’s personal preference against beer. It serves as a social space where she enjoys spending time with her father on the patio, accompanied by snacks and live local music.
For outdoor activities, Maher recommends Leddy Beach as a local favorite, located close to the Burlington Greenway bike path. The 1,500-foot lakeside beach offers opportunities for swimming and relaxing, and is part of Leddy Park, which includes additional recreational facilities such as tennis courts, a baseball diamond, and an indoor ice rink.
Rock Point Commons, a 130-acre area owned by the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont, became accessible to the public in 2019 after previously being closed. Its two-mile hiking trail provides scenic views of the Adirondacks, downtown Burlington, and Lake Champlain, particularly striking during peak fall foliage.
Finally, Maher appreciates Burlington Bay market and café for its local ice cream offerings. Known for Vermont’s traditional “creemees,” or soft serve ice cream, the café provides flavors like maple and black raspberry, alongside savory options such as clam chowder. The venue’s deck offers a popular spot to enjoy views of the sunset over Lake Champlain.
Maher remains actively involved in training for rugby, expressing ambitions to make a strong athletic return before considering retirement around early 2028. Her reflections on Burlington underscore the enduring ties she maintains with the city through its food, nature, and community.
