In a north London garden, an innovative underground refrigeration unit is drawing attention for its blend of traditional cooling methods with modern technology. Installed at OmVed Gardens, a two-and-a-half-acre urban oasis in Highgate Hill, the £14,000 subterranean chamber represents the first of its kind in Britain. Designed and developed by Dutch inventors under the name Groundfridge, the prefabricated underground fridge aims to provide an energy-efficient alternative to conventional refrigeration by utilizing the naturally stable temperatures beneath the earth’s surface.

The concept revives an old practice: before the widespread use of electric refrigerators, underground cellars were commonly used to store perishable foods due to their cool and consistent temperatures. The Groundfridge system updates this approach with modern materials and technology. The unit, roughly 2.2 meters in diameter, is installed by excavating a shaded, preferably north-facing site and placing the insulated chamber about 1.5 meters underground. A solar-powered ventilation system manages humidity and airflow, introducing cold air during the coolest parts of the day in summer and providing frost-free conditions in winter. Additional cooling benefits come from transpiration by the surrounding plants, which helps moderate temperature through natural evaporation processes.

OmVed Gardens, where the Groundfridge is situated, has undergone significant transformation over the past decade, evolving from a derelict garden center into a vibrant landscape featuring meadows, ponds, vegetable plots, and ecological projects. The facility serves as a community space for chefs, horticulturalists, and schoolchildren alike. Staff members note that the fridge has become a notable attraction among visitors, often requiring a “staff only” sign due to frequent attempts to open it.

With a capacity roughly equivalent to a dozen conventional refrigerators, the Groundfridge offers substantial storage space without ongoing electricity costs. The interior maintains temperatures typically between 8 and 12 degrees Celsius, ideal for preserving fruits, vegetables, fermented goods, and preserves—all of which are often harvested from the garden itself. Josephine Marchandise, a chef at OmVed, emphasized the usefulness of the unit in managing surplus produce during harvest times and supporting the garden’s preservation efforts.

While the upfront cost and installation requirements mean the Groundfridge is unlikely to become a standard household item immediately, proponents hope that increased interest and exposure will eventually lower prices and broaden adoption. The system’s designers and OmVed staff see potential not only for food storage but also as a cool retreat during increasingly frequent heatwaves, highlighting its practicality and adaptability in a changing climate.
