Singapore’s coral reefs could face another severe bleaching event in 2027 if a predicted super El Nino develops, just three years after widespread bleaching affected the area. The potential bleaching is expected to occur between March and May 2027, coinciding with the anticipated weakening phase of the current El Nino, when temperature impacts tend to peak.
El Nino conditions are already in place and expected to intensify over August and September this year, according to the Meteorological Service Singapore’s update on May 29. The National Parks Board (NParks) is closely monitoring the situation, warning that coral stress may increase if the forecast holds true.
Coral bleaching occurs when rising sea temperatures cause corals to expel the symbiotic algae that give them their color and provide essential nutrients. Without these algae, corals turn white and become vulnerable to disease and mortality. Severe bleaching events have previously been recorded globally in 1998, 2010, 2016, and most recently in 2024, all following El Nino periods and impacting Singapore’s reefs as well.
Marine biologist Huang Danwei, deputy head of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum at the National University of Singapore, said a rapid escalation of El Nino through mid-2027 would significantly increase the likelihood of another bleaching crisis. According to Karenne Tun, group director of NParks’ National Biodiversity Centre, while recent bleaching episodes in Singapore caused relatively low immediate coral mortality—around 5 to 10 percent—the cumulative effect has already altered reef structures, leading to a dominance of more resilient but less complex coral forms.
In addition to heat stress, chronic issues like sedimentation, turbidity, and coastal development have contributed to the transformation of Singapore’s reefs from branching to massive and dome-shaped corals, which could impact long-term coral survival and reproductive capacity. Huang noted that the increasing frequency of bleaching events leaves less recovery time for coral ecosystems, threatening species that rely on reefs, including fish populations vital to food security and livelihoods in Southeast Asia.
The vulnerability of coral reefs is part of a broader global decline highlighted in the third World Ocean Assessment published earlier this month. The report, authored by over 650 experts from 86 countries, identifies rising ocean temperatures, acidification, pollution, and physical destruction as key factors driving reef degradation worldwide. It notes that disturbances from heatwaves, disease outbreaks, and storms are occurring more often, limiting recovery opportunities.
Ocean acidification—caused by elevated carbon dioxide absorption in seawater—adds further strain by reducing coral skeletal density and growth rates, according to marine biogeochemist Patrick Martin from Nanyang Technological University. While corals show some tolerance to acidification, the combined effects of warming and other stressors place reefs in Southeast Asia at particular risk. Tun stated that many reefs in the region may soon reach a state where growth just barely offsets natural erosion, even if live coral cover remains.
Efforts to restore and conserve coral reefs, such as NParks’ ongoing 100k Corals Initiative launched in late 2024, aim to plant 100,000 corals over the coming decade. However, restoration alone is unlikely to counteract the large-scale impacts of climate change without significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Jani Tanzil, director of the St John’s Island National Marine Laboratory, emphasized that restoration is a costly and limited measure, often considered a last resort except in smaller reef areas like Singapore’s remaining 10 square kilometers.
Experts agree that addressing local stressors and boosting reef resilience through measures like introducing more temperature-tolerant coral species are essential but insufficient without global climate action. Huang encouraged individuals to reduce their carbon footprint, support coastal conservation efforts, and advocate for stronger environmental policies to help protect coral ecosystems.
“Reefs as we know them may not persist through business-as-usual trajectories, but meaningful recovery remains achievable if climate action and restoration efforts advance together urgently,” Huang said.
