After an extensive and highly sensitive transport operation, the Bayeux Tapestry has arrived in England intact and ready for public display at the British Museum, scheduled to open next month. However, specialists responsible for the tapestry’s care are now confronting the challenge of how to safely return the fragile textile to France in 2027 without causing damage.

The Bayeux Tapestry, a nearly 230-foot-long embroidered cloth depicting the Norman conquest of England, was transported with exceptional care, having been laid flat throughout to protect its delicate threads. While this approach minimized risk during transit, experts emphasize that handling the tapestry is now the most precarious aspect of its preservation.

Cecilia Gauvin, head of Science and Mechanics in Conservation of Heritage, an engineering firm contracted by the French government to package the tapestry for its journey, said the process of lifting or pulling the textile carries a significant danger. “Handling it, pulling it, is the most dangerous thing about the tapestry at the moment, even more than transporting it,” she noted, underscoring the limited timeframe available to devise a solution.

At its permanent home in the Bayeux Museum, the tapestry is displayed hanging within a long case that includes a right-angled corner, a method that informed the conservation team’s strategy for its removal. In preparation for its loan to London, which was confirmed by French President Emmanuel Macron, engineers developed a technique to “fold” the tapestry without traditional creasing, which would impose damaging stress on the fabric.

Beginning in 2024, staff carefully bent the tapestry in a zig-zag pattern around custom-made tubes spaced approximately every two meters. Between these gentle curves, fabric screens—serving as cushioning pillows—were inserted, with the outer layers made of Tyvek, a low-friction material designed to reduce strain on the embroidery. Over seven hours, the team completed 27 such folds, continuously monitoring tension to ensure the textile remained unharmed.

The three-party agreement between the United Kingdom, France, and the British Museum requires the tapestry’s return to Bayeux by September 2027. While folding it again for the return journey might appear straightforward, conservators caution against simply reversing the process used for dismantling. The alternative method—pulling protective screens beneath the tapestry and sliding sections inward to fold it—would generate increased friction and risk irreversible damage.

Ms. Gauvin acknowledged the complexity of the task ahead. “We cannot just do the inverse of the same method. We need a new way to put it back in the crate,” she said. “We have a few months to study. We may need to come up with a system of pulleys. We have to find a way to protect the tapestry. We need to prepare and come up with new equipment. There is some pressure.”

With only months remaining to engineer a safe return process, conservationists and engineers are under pressure to innovate solutions that balance the tapestry’s preservation with the logistical demands of its international loan, ensuring this invaluable historical artifact remains intact for future generations.
