Aaron Tveit is set to return to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre later this month for a limited engagement in the final run of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical.” The Tony Award-winning actor will reprise his role as Christian for 15 performances between August 18 and August 29, with current lead Christian Douglas scheduled to resume the part for the show’s closing performance on August 30.

This engagement marks Tveit’s third return to the production since its original Broadway premiere in 2019, where he helped launch the musical and originated the role of Christian. After departing the show in May 2022, Tveit returned for two prior limited engagements: one beginning in January 2023 and another that started in July 2024.

Tveit earned significant acclaim for his work as Christian, winning the 2021 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, as well as an Outer Critics Circle Award. “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” itself was a major success, securing 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

The show draws inspiration from Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film of the same name, blending elements of luxury, burlesque, and jukebox musical styles. Its score mixes original tracks with a variety of popular songs from different eras. While the film featured hits such as “Lady Marmalade,” Elton John’s “Your Song,” and “El Tango de Roxanne,” the stage adaptation updates its soundtrack to include contemporary hits like Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” and Katy Perry’s “Firework.”

Most recently, Tveit appeared on Broadway in the lead role of Freddie Trumper in the revival of “Chess,” performing alongside Lea Michele and Nicholas Christopher. Despite positive attention for his performance, Tveit did not receive a Tony nomination for the role.

“Moulin Rouge! The Musical” is scheduled to conclude its run on August 30, bringing an end to one of Broadway’s standout productions of recent years.
